Could having non-alcoholic beverages on hand be the key to reducing your alcohol intake? That’s what a groundbreaking study from Japan suggests. Being prepared with non-alcoholic options—whether you’re at home or choosing what to bring to a party—can significantly support your mindful drinking goals.
The study
In the first study of its kind, Japanese researchers focused on the impact of non-alcoholic options on individuals who consumed alcohol frequently (but were not diagnosed with alcoholism). Participants were over 20 years old and drank at least four times a week. The intervention group received free non-alcoholic beverages every four weeks for three months. The outcome was striking: a considerable decrease in alcohol consumption among those who had access to non-alcoholic options compared to the control group.
After 12 weeks, researchers measured the change in total alcohol consumption over the past four weeks. The intervention group showed a change of -320.8 grams in alcohol consumption, quadruple the -76.9 grams change observed in the control group. Additionally, the study found that this effect persisted even eight weeks after the intervention, suggesting a lasting change in the participants’ drinking habits.
Embracing non-alcoholic options
Luckily, for those interested in non-alcoholic options, the category has exploded in recent years. Today, there are over 1,200 non-alcoholic spirits, wines, beers, and cocktails currently on the market. Virtually all are available online, and you can even find some in your local grocery and convenience stores. From dupes of your favorite alcoholic spirits to meticulously crafted novel beverages, you’re not stuck with seltzer or Coke anymore.
This new category brings a refreshing change to social settings in particular, offering more sophisticated alternatives to traditional alcoholic drinks. Opting for non-alcoholic options allows you to partake in typical drinking rituals while being conscious of your alcohol intake. It’s an opportunity to enjoy social drinking without the negative after-effects of alcohol, leading to healthier lifestyle choices and improved wellbeing.
Introducing non-alcoholic beverages at social events can also positively shift the drinking culture within your friend circle. It’s a subtle yet effective way to support individual choices and make social gatherings more inclusive, ensuring everyone has a good time, regardless of what’s in their glass.
