On Immortality, Green Sludge and Fighting the #BigTap Lobby

Welcome to the seventh edition of High Spirits, the Dry Atlas newsletter on all the latest happenings in booze-free!

I want to live forever. I’ve said that many times before in conversations and interviews and I don’t get follow up questions. I think people sense that maybe they don’t want to open that can of worms, or maybe they think I’m joking. I’m not.

I think the first immortal human may have already been born. If you’re 1 year old today and you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’ll have a much longer life than we conceive of today, possibly even one that lasts as long as you want it to. If you’re 90 years old today, you probably will not have that opportunity.

I bet most of us are between the ages of 1 and 90. Our current age, how we take care of ourselves from today onwards and a lot of pure dumb luck will determine what side of that chasm we fall on.

For me, reducing alcohol consumption is some of the lowest-hanging fruit in terms of improving my health and lengthening my expected lifespan. I may not get to live forever, but I think I will live a little longer and I don’t miss booze now that so many superior non-alc alternatives exist.

There was some commotion on Twitter this week over the steps entrepreneur Bryan Johnson takes daily to lengthen his expected lifespan. By obsessively and radically fine-tuning his diet, exercise, sleep, supplements, etc., he was able to reduce his epigenetic age by over 5 years in 7 months. He basically made himself younger.

Bryan doesn’t drink a lot of alcohol. His daily protocol includes 2 oz. of red wine, which actually surprised me given that we now know better than to think red wine is good for us.

For me personally, the lengths he goes to – including eating green mush every day – represent a tradeoff between health and enjoyment that I’m not yet ready to make. But I’m open minded to him doing it and I’m excited for anyone who’s experimenting with changes to improve their health and wellness.

New Brand X Dry Atlas happy hours

Thanks to all who joined me to sample Altitude’s brand new trio of white tea + CBD elixirs this past Wednesday! The weekly Dry Atlas happy hours have been a big success so far and we’re going to keep the good times rolling every Wednesday from 5-7.

Join me from 5-7pm today, Wed, 11/30, to try GoodVines de-alcoholized wines from Heidelberg. Swing by and check them out!

Next Wednesday, 12/7, get ready to try Jas’ Paloma Libre before you can get them anywhere else in Manhattan.
