We anticipated an environment where alcohol played a central role in all gatherings, and where non-alc options were few and far between. While <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/hong-kongs-budding-non-alcoholic-scene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our experience in Hong Kong<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was somewhat closer to that picture, Japan revealed a surprisingly diverse drinking culture, one where alcohol alternatives were not just present but abundant and varied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From bustling city centers to quiet neighborhood streets, we discovered a plethora of non-alc spirits, wines, and beers in unexpected places. Convenience stores like 7\/11 and local grocers were treasure troves of choices. Most prevalent were non-alcoholic beers from popular brands like <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asahigroup-holdings.com\/en\/pressroom\/2022\/1115.html\/?ref=dryatlas.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asahi<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator-asia.com\/Article\/2020\/04\/07\/Kirin-Greens-Free-is-the-latest-non-alcoholic-beer-from-the-Japanese-brewery-giant\/?ref=dryatlas.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirin<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/beverages\/product\/suntory-all-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suntory<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We also saw an array of ready-to-drink options from Suntory, from <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/products.suntory.co.jp\/non-al\/?ref=dryatlas.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-alc cocktails<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to their \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suntory.co.jp\/softdrink\/chilling\/?ref=dryatlas.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">Chilling<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d line of GABA and L-theanine-powered relaxation beverages (not to be confused with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator-asia.com\/Article\/2019\/08\/28\/Stress-free-investment-Coca-Cola-Japan-to-enter-local-relaxation-drink-market-hemp-venture\/?ref=dryatlas.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">Chill Out<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a GABA beverage with hemp seed extract via Coca-Cola Japan). Adjacent to these non-alcoholic options, we also found a wide selection of low ABV beverages, like Suntory&#8217;s 3% ABV Horoyoi Cocktail Peach. That quickly became a favorite of mine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15894 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chilling-drinks-japan-cat.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"860\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chilling-drinks-japan-cat.png 860w, https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chilling-drinks-japan-cat-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chilling-drinks-japan-cat-796x421.png 796w, https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chilling-drinks-japan-cat-768x406.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suntory launched its Chilling line in May 2023<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the aisles of 7\/11, one of our standout experiences in Tokyo was a visit to Shibuya\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sumadoribar-shibuya.jp\/?ref=dryatlas.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SUMADORI Bar<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an establishment that epitomizes <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/trend-compass-abv-optionality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABV optionality<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We located this one on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroproofnation.com\/global-map\/?ref=dryatlas.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">Zero Proof Nation\u2019s Global Map<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which tracks non-alc bars and retailers worldwide. At SUMADORI, you can choose from over 100 types of drinks, with the ability to select your desired alcohol content for all of them (0%, 0.5%, or 3% ABV). The flexibility and creativity was remarkable. We indulged in a few 0% ABV cocktails and sampled a flight of whiskeys at each ABV level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another memorable stop in Tokyo was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maruku09.com\/?ref=dryatlas.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\">Low Alcoholic Cafe MARUKU<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nestled in the Meguro City neighborhood. This quaint cafe stood out with its selection of non-alcoholic beverages sourced from Europe, the US, and beyond. MARUKU\u2019s owners were kind enough to open early just for Douglas and me, and we enjoyed <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/beverages\/product\/tanqueray-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanqueray 0.0<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cocktails and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/dryatlas.com\/staging\/beverages\/product\/bravus-brewing-co-oatmeal-stout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bravus Oatmeal Stouts<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as we learned more about the cafe\u2019s origins (via heavy use of our Google Translate app).
